Artist's Comments

For a large project I'm working on, I need to figure out how to "fix" watercolors. I have done an underpainting in watercolors that I don't want to screw up by adding watercolor overpaint without fixing.

So I tried an experiment with Krylon Workable Fix. Unfortunately, the result was as expected: the fixative resisted the overpainting.

I didn't want to totally toss this little painting, though, because I was having so much fun with it, so I did the overpainting in acrylics.

The second part of the experiment was a resounding success: On the advice of someone over at wetcanvas.com, I switched from a payne's gray underpainting to a violet one. It really does punch up the overpainting in a lovely way.

That coat looks like actual fabric. Nicely done! (Love the smirk, too.)

personally I think the bits where the fixer hasn't blended with the overpainting gives it a nice texture.

Yeah, I agree. Fortunately, her face was smooth, and the texture on the jacket just makes it look like some kind of non-smooth fabric. I don't dare use the fixer again, though, because next time it might be the face that beads up. Plus, it wouldn't take watercolor at all. The watercolor beaded up like water on oil.
